Hello readers, it’s time for another new segment called Greenscape Geeks – In the Field, and today is about phenology! When you are part of a vibrant environmental community, it’s easy to keep busy and make new friends. Most recently, Greenscape Geeks attended a workshop at Holliday Park Nature Center, hosted by Amanda Wanlass. If you tune into our podcast, Greenscape Geekout, Amanda Wanlass was the passionate mind behind Indiana Phenology.
Her workshop this past Saturday began with a small lecture about the changing of leaf colors during the fall season. This included signs to look for if you pursue any backyard observations of your own! The workshop ended with some tree identification and a hike; the weather was very conducive for some leg-stretching. Amanda had plenty of informative handouts that made the information easy to digest and understand as well as a thorough understanding of midwestern phenology. Folks at the workshop asked questions, shared stories, and were excited to come back for the next one. If you’re interested in Amanda’s work at Indiana Phenology reach out to her here. She encourages everyone to become a citizen scientist and create a Nature’s Notebook account, no science degree necessary. Nature’s Notebook seeks to combine all sorts of observational data to scientists that don’t have the resources to do it themselves. They use global to assess the impact of climate variables on the timing of flowering in 2,500 species of plants. Pictures don’t tell the whole story, but they certainly show off some of the smiles the group shared!
